Taman Ayun temple is built in the
district of Mengwi, Badung, Bali. Pura Taman Ayun was built in 1634
by the Raja of Mengwi, I Gusti Agung Putu. Taman Ayun literally translates
as "beautiful garden" has long been well known as a tourist
attraction in Bali and is generally regarded as one of the paces of
interest - in Bali.
Many people visit this temple, not for its antiquity as
it was only renovated in 1937, but for its ambience and air of serenity.
It is a so called 'Pura Kawiten' or family temple, a special temple
where the deified ancestors of the Raja Dynasty of Mengwi and important
gods of other temples are honored.
Taman Ayun is situated in a beautiful park with trees
and ponds, near the village of Mengwi in the south of Bali near Ubud
and Denpasar. Pura Taman Ayun is a beautiful place - really one of the

Pura Taman Ayun is surrounded by ponds. The only way to
enter the hindu temple Pura Taman Ayun is via a bridge leading to an
ornamented 'candi bentar' on Pura Taman Ayun, the gate which gives access
to the outer courtyard (jaba) of the Bali temple. The temple is really

A footpath leads
on to a second candi bentar the 'jaba tengah', the more elevated, second
courtyard of the Taman Ayun. Inside here is the third and most holy
courtyard of the temple in which the most important shrines are located.
You are only allowed access to the jaba jero during religious ceremonies.
Due to the 210-day cycle of the Pawukon calendar, the
odalan of the Pura Taman Ayun, , takes place every 210 days on a day
called Anggara Kasih. The ceremonies of the odalan comprise a period
of several days.
